About This Video
Sitting with your legs together or crossed for hours shortens the inner thigh muscles and restricts hip mobility. The butterfly stretch opens the adductors and hip joints that desk work compresses, restoring the lateral range of motion your hips need for comfortable walking and movement after a long day at your desk.
How to Perform This Technique
Sit on the floor and bring the bottoms of your feet together in front of you.
Scoot your hips so both sit bones are flat on the ground.
Hold your shins or ankles to pull yourself upright, or clasp your hands around your toes.
Lift through your chest, raise your head high, and bend forward at the waist keeping your back straight.
Take nice deep breaths — inhale and exhale smoothly — while you focus on letting your knees open toward the ground.
Let gravity relax you deeper into the stretch.
When you're ready to go deeper, bring your head forward and round your back slightly to settle toward the floor.
Keep breathing as you continue letting gravity open your hips and the ground support you.
